[email protected]Writer, teacher, and translator-in-training weaving personal truths into shared human stories
Hello! You can call me Xin Er.
Since young, I've envisioned myself writing under a pseudonym. I came up with Chaslin Xines. It's a mix-and-match of the different syllables in my unofficial English name and Chinese name. I worried about whether people would pronounce Xines as 'signs' or 'zines', when even I have yet to figure out which it should be. From now, however, I write under my legal name. While doing my Master's in Creative Writing at Nanyang Technological University, I came across works from different fiction writers from around the world. I realised my problem: most of what I had been reading was from the far west, but it's time for me to read and write closer to home.To me, Singapore is a liminal space, almost a perfect chronotope of the threshold (in Bakhtin's words), where modernity and tradition meet. That's where I want my writing to take me, to that in-between where tensions live and become rich areas to explore in the literary.Thank you for reading! Looking forward to get to know you on my socials.
